Ingrid Betancourt is a Colombian politician and activist who was kidnapped on February 23, 2002 and held as a hostage by FARC. Betancourt first came to world attention with the book "Until Death Do Us Part" (2004), written together with journalist Clara Rojas. After spending six years as a hostage of the Farc guerrilla movement in Colombia, she was rescued on July 2, 2008. Despite long periods of solitary confinement and some physical abuse, Ingrid Betancourt says she never lost hope throughout her captivity. During most of her captivity she was kept in the dark about the outside world, but she discovered a few things about her own country thanks to what she learned from her kidnappers. Amongst other things, Betancourt says that FARC's claim that 90 per cent of the world's cocaine passes through Colombia is not true, that former president Andrés Pastrana had made peace with FARC but Uribe had put an end to it, and that FARC would be willing to surrender their weapons if they are given political power. She also expresses frustration at not being able to talk with the Colombian government during her captivity. She says the guerrillas never tortured her, but they certainly did not treat her well. Betancourt writes about how she coped with these long periods of solitary confinement, saying she got by with books, music and keeping the faith. ""It was all so dark that I invented a little game to get me through it,"" she writes. ""If you imagine that every day is sunny and blue sky, pretty soon it will be."" She claims that even when her kidnappers were at their cruelest to her, she always felt that they would one day let her go. ""I never lost hope,"" Betancourt writes. Her faith was sustained by regular letters from her parents and scattered visits from comrades in captivity. Betancourt writes that she was initially terrified by the arrival of a new, silent and much bigger guerrilla named Jairo, whose mere presence made her tremble. But he proved to be "a gentle giant" who slowly won her confidence. He eventually revealed to her that his real name was Jorge Torres, and he had been with FARC for the last 12 years. She said Jairo (Torres) helped her overcome many fears and become stronger as a person. Betancourt said she was sorry that he had been killed in an anti-guerrilla raid near the Venezuelan border because she believed that they would have married and had children if they'd ever been able to return to normal life. eccc085e13
